This article explains how to make a working backup of a Wii original disc
for use on a modified Wii. Read my other posting about modifying a Wii.
After doing this, put your original disk in a save place while you are
using the copy.
The first step to do is to get the right hardware and software.
First I describe the necessary hardware.
You will need one of the following DVD drive types to make a working copy:
* HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR816x
Other people confirmed using other even more general types
like the HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR8082N0106.
So drives of the following type may be working as well:
* HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR8xxx
Personally I have the 8164b and have had zero problems.
Connect it to the internal IDE as single master.
Once you install this drive into your computer you will need a
proper software. Currently there are only three programs available for the PC
that can do the job. I advice you to take
Hektosoft´s Hektographfor which I make this description. You should take this software
because it is by far the most stable, most comfortable and the fastest
dumping tool for the PC on the planet. It beats the competition in every respect.
The two other tools either need with their fastest dumping method
3.5 hours or they often crash because of .NET usage. Hektograph takes
just about 2-2.5 hours for the same job, is .NET free, runs stable and is
the most comfortable choice.
Install the Software by unpacking the archive and start
the application by executing "cdr.exe".
- Now insert your Wii original into the LG drive.
Wait a few seconds until the drive stops working on the
disc. You can recognise this when the drive LED stops
flashing.
- Click on "Reading" in the Tab-Control.
- Click "Disc-Info"
- Then Click "Save-Image..."
- A dialog opens in which you can change the name of the imagefile.
Normally the diskname should be preset here with the name of the game.
You have to choose a target drive that is formated with NTFS but not
FAT32 because the resulting filesize will be larger than 4GB.
- Click "OK" and the Image creation begins.
The image creation takes just about 2 hours.
- Next step is to click on "Burning" in the Tab-Control.
- Now Insert your blank medium into the recorder and let your
recorder detect the medium type. See my other post in this forum
to decide which media type to choose.
- Then you click on "Browse..." to select the image you have just made
and further you set the checkbox on "Close Disc".
- Then set the recording speed with the drop down menu to 4x.
- Finally click "Start Burning..." to record the image to the disc.
A new dialog opens in which you can see the recording progress.
The burning is ready if the button changes from Cancel to OK.
Then you are ready to click "OK" and press "Disc-Info" to see
how the disc has been recorderd.
If you need additional informations (i.e. about media types or backups etc.)
look for my other postings in this forum.

P.S.
Informations which might be stored in the Burst Cutting Area (BCA) of the
original disk can not be read out on the PC. The reason for this is that PC
drives are usually not equipped with a BCA reading device. One has also
to keep in mind that NSMB is currently the only game which uses the BCA to
store some information which it uses to check if an original disk is inserted.
